About the Society

The Japan British Society of Kagoshima (JBSK) was established in 1992 in cooperation with local academics, cultural groups, and businesses to "further improve the relations between Kagoshima and the UK, which share a deep historical link," on the advice of the former British ambassador to Japan, Sir Hugh Cortazzi. This was also motivated by a study by the late Professor Emeritus Hachirō Satō on William Willis, a British physician who founded a medical school in Kagoshima and contributed to improving medical education and practices in the region.

The UK and Kagoshima (historically known as Satsuma) share deep historical ties since the Anglo-Satsuma War in 1863. The Satsuma government sent 19 students to the UK in 1865. We promote such historical connections and foster friendship between the UK and Kagoshima by inviting British ambassadors and organising lectures, social events, and essay competitions related to Japan and the UK.
